Building the Future: Understanding the Diverse World of Prefab Construction Technology
Today, innovation and construction go hand in hand. One of the innovations reshaping the fundamental way in which structures are built is prefab construction. This type of construction is gaining a lot of traction as it is sustainable and faster than conventional construction methods.
Prefab construction is an umbrella term used for every modern and sustainable construction method in which the structure is built off-site and assembled on-site. This blog will introduce you to six prefab construction methods and their unique characteristics to broaden your understanding of the concept and make sustainable choices on a larger scale.
The Growing Popularity of Prefab Construction
The Indian construction industry is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. It accounts for 32% of the national greenhouse gas emission inventory. Furthermore, according to the Global Alliance for Building and Construction, the total building floor area in India is expected to reach 57.6 billion square meters by 2050.
If corrective measures are not followed, the emission of greenhouse gases will increase to a level from which there might be no turning back. This alarming situation that has compelled the Indian construction industry to take strict steps towards curbing the amount of greenhouse gases being emitted through building practices. This has brought prefab construction into the picture as a key solution, as prefab construction methods significantly reduce greenhouse emissions through practices of using alternative building materials, reducing dependency on natural resources, and more.
Nest-In: A Leader of Prefabricated Construction Solutions
Nest-In from the house of Tata Steel stands out as one of the leading companies in India, and offers sustainable prefab construction solutions that cover a diverse range of requirements such as hospitals, clinics, schools, training institutes, cabins, offices, farmhouses, villas, guard huts labour accommodation, bachelor accommodation, and more. These offerings are spread over six types of prefab construction methods, and each type contributes to environmental conservation without compromising on quality of the structure. These six types are: Light Gauge Steel Framing (LGSF), Modular, Pre-Engineered Buildings (PEB), Hybrid, Panelised, and 3D Volumetric.
Types of Prefabricated Construction Technology Used by Nest-In
1. Light Gauge Steel Frames (LGSF)
The most popular prefab construction method is Light Gauge Steel Framing (LGSF) . Nest-In’s LGSF construction technology uses lightweight steel frames as the load-bearing dry wall, cladded with fibre-cement boards to provide a brick-and-mortar like finish.
The steel frames are manufactured off-site in a factory-controlled environment and therefore are precise and accurate in measurement. They are transported to the construction site only for structural erection. Due to this, the construction process of LGSF structures is not heavily dependent on weather conditions, heavy machinery, transportation, and labour. Thus, Nest-In's LGSF buildings are built 2x faster than RCC structures.
2. Modular Construction
Another popular choice of prefab construction is modular construction. This type of prefab construction entails constructing and assembling sections or modules of a structure in a factory-controlled environment, and transporting it to the final site only for installation and electrical and plumbing connections. Nest-In's modular structures are built 2x faster than traditional RCC structures.
3. Light PEB (Pre-Engineered Buildings)
Pre-Engineered Buildings or PEB construction is done with prefabricated rigid hot-rolled frames made up of tapered columns and rafters and cladded with pre-painted Galvalume steel sheeting.
4. Panelised Construction
These are structures of prefabricated tubular columns and beams, cladded with factory-finished sandwich panels made up of polyurethane foam or mineral wool core with pre-painted Galvalume sheets on both sides.
5. Hybrid Construction
This type of construction is a combination of hot-rolled columns and beams that make up the main structure and Light Gauge Steel Frames (LGSF) that make up the interior and exterior filler walls. The structure is finished with fibre-cement boards to provide a brick-and-mortar like finish.
6. 3D Volumetric Construction
This type of construction involves vertically stacking factory-manufactured modular units on-site to form the complete infrastructure of a building.
The popularity of prefab construction is growing. If you are looking for a partner for prefabricated steel building solutions, Nest-In is the one for you.
