What is the Future of Charging Stations in India
According to a study by Grant Thornton Bharat & FICCI, as of December 2021, there are only about 1028 public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in India. However, due to the rise in fuel prices, people are now switching to electric vehicles. This means there will be a tremendous increase in the demand for electric vehicle charging stations.
Expansion of EV charging stations in big and smaller cities
EV charging stations in India are primarily installed in cities like Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Surat, Delhi, and Mumbai. However, considering the need for more EV vehicles in the country, the government has plans to establish charging stations throughout the country.
The government of India plans to expand the charging station coverage in India in a phased manner. According to the Consolidated Guidelines for Electric Vehicles issued by the Ministry of Power on 14th January 2022, in Phase 1, all big cities with a population of four million and above will be targeted to establish charging stations. In phase 2, the state capital and union territories will receive the charging stations.
The Government of India has been making a 360-degree effort to enhance public EV charging station infrastructure by involving private and public organisations. Many private players have come forward to install charging stations for the vehicles and create a vast network in every part of the country. Tata Steel Nest-In, being at the forefront introduced a modular EV charging station offering named ChargeNest.
