Importance of Hygienic Sanitation Facilities for The General Public
It is no secret that sanitation and hygiene are necessities for the wellbeing of humans. But what is hygiene exactly? Hygiene refers to specific practices that promote good health and cleanliness among the individual and society. On the other hand, sanitation is a set of public health conditions such as clean air, access to clean drinking water, and a disease-free environment.
Proper hygiene and sanitation are vital for our physical, social, psychological, and spiritual health. But, there has been a distinct lack of hygienic sanitation facilities in India for a long time. Open defecation has been a common practice for ages, and even today, the practise continues in many places. Even though the government has built public toilets and sanitation facilities, most of these facilities continue to be in a sorry state. This situation can be attributed to two main factors – lack of maintenance of such facilities and lack of hygiene practices among the people.
To make India an open defecation-free country, the government of India launched the 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' in 2014. Under the initiative, the government took multiple steps to transform India by addressing hygiene and sanitation-related issues. Perhaps one of the most important steps was installing portable public toilets in urban and rural areas.
While the Swachh Bharat initiative by the government has seen significant success in improving the country's sanitation condition, there is massive scope for improvement. For the programme to be successful, it is vital that every individual in the country partakes in it and contributes their best individually. In the end, it is up to the individual how clean and hygienic they want to keep the environment.
The responsibility includes adopting a sanitation solution that promotes the best hygienic practices and holds other people accountable. As an individual, you can help India transform into a cleaner and healthier country by first keeping your home and locality neat and clean. When everyone realises this and takes the necessary steps, the nation will automatically become clean.
You can also contribute to the Swachh Bharat initiative's success by spreading awareness about maintaining proper sanitation among the people around and educating them to use the toilets correctly and safely. You can also raise awareness about how adequate sanitation can help in preventing the spread of diseases. You may also hold conversations and discussions with the people around and sensitise the people about the issue.
