Importance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for Worker's Safety
Every construction business has certain risks involved. Compared to conventional RCC construction, modular construction is much safer as the processes are guided by strict standardisation practices.
The Nest-In Shield initiative introduced, aims to make the worksite safe for all our solution partners and their workers and make it an accident-free zone.
The construction workers must strictly adhere to the safety standards ensuring one’s own and the co-worker’s safety. One of the being, wearing the PPE kit at all times.
What is PPE?
Personal protective equipment, commonly referred to as "PPE", is an equipment worn to minimize exposure to hazards that cause serious workplace injuries and illnesses. These injuries and illnesses may result from contact with chemical, radiological, physical, electrical, mechanical, or other workplace hazards. Personal protective equipment may include items such as gloves, safety glasses, shoes, earplugs or muffs, hard hats, respirators, or coveralls, vests and full body suits.
Important things to know about PPE
Nest-In from the house of Tata Steel, ensure that the workers' safety is of utmost importance and non-compliance to safety protocols is not permitted.
Generally, in a modular construction factory, the line supervisor’s responsibility is to ensure that all employees use an appropriate type of PPE to protect themselves from the various hazards. The supervisor must also ensure that the employees' use perfect-fitting PPE. Improper fitting or damaged PPE is equal to no PPE and leaves the workers vulnerable to injuries.
PPE Safety Standards followed by Tata Steel Nest-In
At Nest-In by Tata Steel, the employees use PPE specified by Tata Steel and certified by IS (Indian Standards)/ EN (European Norm)/ ANSI (American National Standard Institute). The line manager is also responsible for training the workers on the proper usage of the PPE to prevent damage.
Just as the line managers, the employees, too, have specific responsibilities. The prescribed PPE’s should not be removed under any circumstance during working hours. Also, the employees must provide timely and correct feedback about PPE related to hazard protection and comfort.
The use of PPE is not mandatory inside the control room or operator cabin, if there is any site meeting inside the control room or the operator is using the Control desk in her/his specified seat, unless use of PPE is mentioned in SOP for example to look at the vessel, the operator needs to use Green Visor or Green Safety goggles which gives protection against the glare coming out of red hot molten steel. While coming out from control room/pulpit all the required PPEs should be worn properly by own and contractor employees before moving forward.
What purpose does different PPE serve?
Helmets
Helmets offer protection to the head from injuries occurring from falling objects. It also helps reduce the impact of the collision with stationary objects or accidental falls.
The employees must strictly use the correct type of helmet and adhere to the colour codes. The colour code is implemented to differentiate personnel and visitors. For example, the following colours are reserved under Tata Steel:
- BLUE for Tata Steel employee.
- YELLOW for contractor employee.
- ORANGE for visitors
- RED for fire fighters
- GREEN for safety professionals
Safety Goggles
Safety goggles protect the eye from damage due to impact, penetration burns, splashes, flying particles and Ultra Violet radiation. Safety goggles must be worn at all times in all secure boundary areas, except while inside an office, amenity, cabin or fully enclosed vehicle.
Bodysuit
The purpose of the bodysuit is to protect the body from injuries such as cuts, grazes, burns and the effects of exposure to heat, cold and ultra violet radiation & collision from moving machines.
Nest-In team encourages all solution partners to familiarize themselves with safety protocols and rules and abide by them strictly to avoid any accident/incident taking place at the worksite.
