Mobile Toilets- The Need of the Hour in India
Growing up in a clean and safe environment is every child’s right. Access to clean water, basic toilets, and good hygiene practices not only keeps children thriving, but also gives them a healthier start in life.
Despite COVID-19 putting the spotlight on the importance of hand hygiene to prevent the spread of disease, three billion people worldwide, including hundreds of millions of school-going children, do not have proper access to handwashing facilities with soap. People living in rural areas, urban slums, disaster-prone areas are the most vulnerable and the most affected.
The Swachh Bharat Mission was launched by the Government of India in 2014to combat the problem of open defecation. However, even today, many communities still do not have access to adequately clean and hygienic sanitation facilities.
Let’s look at some of the key issues arising due to lack of access to toilets.
Important Issues Arising Out of Shortage of Toilets
-
Health
Personal health is most affected by the lack of hygienic toilets and proper sanitation facilities. Clean toilets can help maintain sanitation that prevents the spreading of water-borne diseases like dysentery and diarrhoea.
-
Gender Inequality
Many girls in rural areas tend to drop out of school due to absence of proper sanitation facilities. Building clean toilets in schools are known to increase the number of enrolment among girls and decrease the drop-out rate.
Thus, the presence of clean toilets in schools will also help with with improved literacy rate among the population.
How Can Modular Toilets Help?
Despite the many benefits they offer, modular toilets in India are yet to witness widespread acceptance due to a lack of awareness. Portable toilets can be effective in providing clean toilets on a large scale because of the following reasons.
-
Easy to Install and Portable
They can be easily installed at any place, making them an ideal choice for clean public toilets in both rural and urban areas. Moreover, when not in use, they can be easily transported to a different location. This makes them a great fit for off-site locations. -
Easy Maintenance
A permanent structure does not give full access to the internal plumbing of the toilet. Hence a leakage in the internal pipes can only be mended by breaking down the wall or floor and repairing it. Portable toilets provide complete access to all the external and internal fittings, making them easier to repair.
-
Durable
These are made of robust and insulated steel structures, making them durable and long-lasting. -
Differently-abled Friendly
They can be specially designed for differently-abled individuals, with ramp entry, railings and high wash basins.
