Smart Toilets contributing towards a sustainable and safer living in India
As humans, the hierarchy of our basic needs start from physiological which includes food, water, clothing, shelter, sleep to name a few. These are some of the most basic needs to survive and could be considered human rights as well. 'Development' and 'Depletion' are two sides of the same coin. While development promises a better life for the current generation, it also creates a lot of pressure on the natural resources that raises the concerns for their depletion and impact on future generations. Therefore, as individuals and corporations it is our responsibility to preserve the natural resources and come up with sustainable practices that minimize the pressure on them.
To meet the basic requirements for a sustainable sanitation system, communities need support to have toilets in a safe and accessible setting with access to clean water. Women and children are most affected, due to the lack of sanitation facilities including clean and safe toilets in the rural communities. It leads to several health issues amongst girl children, due to which they cannot attend school and often face the risk of water-borne and sanitation-related diseases. Equal and ready access to toilets can help prevent premature deaths, thus helping wage-earners live longer. Communities can continue to prosper with social benefits such as physical safety, privacy, and comfort.
As the Government has made waves with its national Swachh Bharat Mission, it is equally important for corporates to play a helping hand through trusts and CSR-led initiatives. Nest-In from the house of Tata Steel, one of India's leading modular services, offers EzyNest, a modular toilet that provides an effective and end-to-end sanitation solution for all. It was launched to support the Swachh Bharat Mission India to provide clean and hygienic toilets to local communities.
Despite the many benefits they offer, modular toilets in India are yet to witness widespread acceptance due to a lack of awareness. Portable toilets can be effective in providing clean toilets on a large scale because of the following reason
Easy to Install and Portable
They can be easily installed at any place, making them an ideal choice for clean public toilets in both rural and urban areas. Moreover, when not in use, they can be easily transported to a different location. This makes them a great fit for off-site locations.
Easy Maintenance
A permanent structure does not give full access to the internal plumbing of the toilet. Hence a leakage in the internal pipes can only be mended by breaking down the wall or floor and repairing it. Portable toilets provide complete access to all the external and internal fittings, making them easier to repair.
Durable
These are made of robust and insulated steel structures, making them durable and long-lasting.
Differently-abled Friendly
They can be specially designed for differently-abled individuals, with ramp entry, railings and high wash basins.
For India to contribute and support the world-wide objective of global sanitation for all by 2030, members of the community must prioritize efforts and strive to provide their continuous support to strengthen existing health infrastructures and spread awareness on key health initiatives in the country. Achieving sanitation on a global scale starts from the grassroots, with the Government, corporations, communities, policymakers and the people working towards the aim of achieving and sustained sanitation for all. Real impact can be achieved only by working together towards a cleaner and healthier future for the nation.
