World Toilet Day and Where India Stands in Clean Sanitation
Since 2013, World Toilet Day is globally observed on November 19 to raise awareness about the pressing issue of safe sanitation for all. As of 2021, a staggering 3.6 billion people across the globe do not have access to safe sanitation. Lack of proper sanitation facilities can lead to various challenges such as:
- Contamination of drinking-water sources
- Contamination of food crops
- Quick spreading of deadly diseases and epidemics like diarrhoea, cholera, etc.
Water and Sanitation for All – Sustainable Development Goal 6
The UN has prepared a list of 17 sustainable development goals for all its member countries that can help in promoting prosperity while protecting the planet. Universal access to clean water and sanitation is Goal 6 among them which aims to achieve this target by 2030.
Valuing Toilets
The UN campaign for World Toilet Day, 2021, is built on the theme of ‘valuing toilets’. While clean sanitation is one of the basic amenities for leading a dignified life, toilets are still poorly managed and often neglected in many parts of the world.
However, access to hygienic sanitation infrastructure can have immense benefits.
- As per UN reports, safe sanitation can result in increased productivity, and the creation of new employment opportunities along the entire service chain of various industries
- Many girls around the world drop out of school due to the lack of clean and safe toilet facilities in their schools. Building toilets can help women realize their full potential in the workplace and contribute towards uplifting the society.
The State of Sanitation in India
The number of deaths due to unsafe sanitation in India is still higher than the neighbouring countries that are relatively lesser developed. This can be attributed to the fact that a large portion of the population is still lacking clean sanitation facilities like proper septic tank, running water for hand washing etc.
In 2014, the Government of India launched a country-wide campaign, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan or Clean India Mission, to eliminate open defecation and improve solid waste management. Since the launch of the mission more than 12 million toilets have been constructed in rural areas, contributing to UN’s SDG 6.
The issues of health and well-being are closely related to that of functional sanitation systems. India is focused on ensuring access to sanitation services to all.
