Modular Construction in Healthcare - The Future of Design
Modular construction is an innovative concept where the buildings, made of individual sections or modules, are constructed offsite in a factory setting. Once all the modules are built, they are transported to the designated location and are installed on a prepared ground for final assembly and finishing.
Over the past few years, modular construction technology has gained immense popularity in India. With the Government of India encouraging construction of affordable housing units, the modular construction method is utilised to build high-quality structure at a faster pace.
Modular construction in the healthcare industry
In India, the healthcare industry has been facing several challenges when dealing with the construction of new hospitals and other medical care facilities. Another major problem that the hospitals face, especially in the purview of the COVID-19, is accommodating a massive influx of patients. Many hospitals are operating at the optimum capacity with minimum or zero scopes for increasing the operational capacity.
Many hospitals are also facing issues with the installation of state-of-the-art medical and diagnostic equipment. To expand the medical facilities in the country and to ensure that the public healthcare system caters to a maximum number of people, the Government of India is encouraging the healthcare systems to focus on public health without sacrificing quality. In such a situation, modular construction comes as the perfect solution.
Benefits of Modular Construction in Healthcare
Modular construction enables the completion of a project in less than half of the time taken by the traditional building methods. In a time of crisis like the COVID-19 pandemic, time is invaluable in building new healthcare set-ups.
Another significant benefit of using modular construction is that it is highly flexible. From hospital buildings to diagnostic centres and quarantine facilities, modular units are efficiently designed to fit traditional hospitals. The technique also allows building portable units that can be easily transported to different parts of the country where there is greater demand.
These units can be easily disassembled, removed and refurbished as per the changing needs. Since most of the building process takes place in a factory, it eliminates the risk of delay in the building timelines due to worker issues, bad weather, etc.
Lastly, modular construction technology is environment-friendly. Research suggests that modular construction reduces the wastage produced by the traditional methods by up to 90%. Also, the construction process consumes up to 60% less energy. With social distancing as a new normal, modular construction reduces the labour contact as the workforce is split between onsite and offsite construction.
